Two icons of British luxury brands join forces this February in an exclusive takeover that celebrates heritage and adventure
Burberry turns Harrods ‘knight blue’ this winter
We may associate the month of February with all things pink (or at least a romantic red), but heritage British fashion giant Burberry has turned Knightsbridge blue for an exciting month-long takeover of Harrods.
The takeover signals the start of a memorable year for Harrods, which celebrates its 175th anniversary in 2024. The theme takes inspiration from Burberry’s history of exploration and the outdoors as outfitters for famed explorers of the past. The exterior of Harrods’ celebrated building has been given a Burberry makeover in seasonal blue check, with even the awnings and doormen’s famous uniforms given a catwalk-worthy refresh. Eagle-eyed passers-by will notice that the awnings are in fact peeled-back tent canopies and there are further nods to the great outdoors with camping-themed window decorations, including guy ropes, draped waterproof fabrics and carabiners.
Every night throughout February, the building will be lit up in “knight blue”, a new signature hue introduced by Burberry chief creative officer Daniel Lee, who took the reins in 2022 and also resurfaced the knight logo from the archives. Inside Harrods, the outdoorsy theme continues with the Burberry Camping Corner, which offers classic British hiking accessories such as a bespoke knight bottle opener and hot-water bottle, as well as a limited-edition orienteering map of Knightsbridge designed in collaboration with the charity Open City. Feeling peckish? You’ll also have a chance to pick up a slice of Romney’s Kendal Mint Cake, the snack of choice for explorers and mountaineers. If the not-so-glamorous world of camping isn’t exactly your cup of tea, you’ll be pleased to know that Burberry has also unveiled a capsule collection of more than 40 pieces exclusive to Harrods, including menswear, womenswear, childrenswear and accessories.
But you needn’t even step foot inside the legendary department store for the full Burberry experience. For a limited time, hungry shoppers can warm up with a Burberry-branded food truck selling classic British pastries and hot drinks, alongside a dedicated picnic space in which to stop and watch the world go by.
‘Burberry’s takeover of the world’s most recognisable department store, Harrods, brings together two icons of British luxury in a celebration of exploration and the outdoors,’ commented Jonathan Akeroyd, Burberry’s chief executive officer. ‘Daniel [Lee] has created a uniquely Burberry experience exclusively at Harrods that embraces our very British spirit of fun and adventure.’
‘We are excited to be collaborating with one of the world’s most celebrated luxury department stores,’ added Lee. ‘We’re bringing together two iconic British brands by designing a capsule collection with product exclusive to Harrods and creating an experience in-store. The partnership is inspired by our heritage of exploration.’
The Burberry Harrods takeover runs until 29 February 2024; Harrods 87-135 Brompton Road, SW1X 7XL
