After almost 20 years at The Dorchester, Dim Sum by China Tang has officially launched a standalone restaurant in Harrods’ famed Dining Hall
Dim Sum by China Tang opens in Harrods Dining Hall
An intimate 25-cover concession with countertop dining for a front-row seat of the chefs at work, Dim Sum by China Tang presents a carefully curated selection of dim sum and signature dishes from its prestigious Mayfair sister.
Inviting us to its brand-new Knightsbridge destination, the restaurant’s usual Art Deco style feels right at home in the Harrods Dining Hall and is united by Chef He’s meticulous approach to dim sum, having been with China Tang at The Dorchester since 2019.
First on the plate is the Iberico pork xiao long bao, otherwise known as a soup dumpling. Recommended to us as a menu bestseller, the long bao bursts with a warming broth and an aromatic herby pork filling that almost feels festive set against the glittering garlands in the hall. Other steamed dim sum variations include the morel mushroom, har kau (a delicious light shrimp dumpling) and chicken dumplings in a spicy sauce.
Make sure to leave your appetite intact for the second course. The stir-fried fillet of beef in black pepper is nothing short of beautiful. Glazed and peppered with chilli seeds, the dish seems to already melt in the mouth before I even reach for my cutlery. To taste, however, is something different entirely. Sweet at first with a lasting heat, the beef is silky and entirely moreish.
At the other end of the table is the sweet and sour chicken, a hard follow-up act and yet, the sticky glaze brings a fresh tanginess to the palate. Deep fried, the chicken is tossed in the sweet sauce with fresh bell peppers. Accompanied by stir-fried yellow noodles and king prawn fried rice, the course is a classic, albeit elevated, Cantonese culinary experience.
Perhaps surprisingly, the stand-out of the entire meal came in the form of dessert. Sceptics of sweet dumplings have obviously yet to try China Tang’s dark chocolate offering with a gooey rich centre that feels closer to a decadent brownie than a dumpling. On the zestier side and a Dorchester favourite, the lemon salted egg yolk custard bun makes a starring appearance. Soft steamed buns with a citrus middle, the dessert felt wonderfully light. Enjoy with the decorative sprig of mint for a fresh coolness that complements the subtle saltiness of the custard.
Surrounded by culinary powerhouses such as Pasta Evangelists and Kerridge’s Fish and Chips by award-winning chef Tom Kerridge, Dim Sum by China Tang joins a host of culinary artisans and it’s safe to say is a welcomed addition to this gastronomic paradise.
